What makes up a Florentine
Mary Ellen and Jeannette asked what a Florentine was. I apologise that it wasn't the best of pictures - I'll just have to have another one soon so I can take a better pohoto! The only place I have come across the name Florentine for this bit of heaven on earth is in the Woodlands Centre in Stornoway . Otherwise, like Jeannette, I have only heard of Eggs Florentine. Unfortunately I don't have the recipe but it is a bit like a very spread out version of my Mum's recipe for cornflake crunch (cornflakes, sugar, syrup, and chocolate) with sliced almonds and glace cherries, drizzled with dark chocolate. I tried making some last year but it just fell to pieces so there is obviously a delicate balance to be got between the cornflakes and the syrup/chocolate. Having said that, the ones at the Woodlands Centre do fall apart a bit when you eat them. Messy food is always the best!

Your last line, there: "Messy food is always the best." - My boys will tell you that their momma made up that line :o). John, I say that ALL of the time because it is so true...
ReplyDeleteDribbling through my fingers, down my chin or splattering all through the plate...mmmmm.
I can't imagine how one gets cornflakes, along with the other ingredients, to stay together, but I must admit, it sounds yummy. Much better than I had imagined, for anything named Florentine around here has spinach in it, and is not particularly suited for coffee accompaniment.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the clarification!
We always have Florentines at Christmas time - they are nice with white chocolate, too.
ReplyDeleteGood to see you appreciate the joys of a Tunnocks Tea Cake, though - we used to buy them for 3d (old money) in the school shop in the 60s.
Sounds a really good festive treat, Geranium Cat. I don't suppose you have a recipe???
ReplyDeleteMessy foods...isn't that why they invented hoses???
ReplyDeleteI did find this recipe, http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/florentines-recipe/index.html but it doesn't have corn flakes!! It does have 5 stars though...
ReplyDeleteThank you for that explanation, Scriptor! Sounds good , who cares, in one's mouth it falls apart anyway:)
ReplyDeleteObviously all I have to do is blog about food and everyone drools! Thanks for the recipe Shabby Girl - a bit different but sounds worth trying.
