The Crane (Grus grus) is a very rare accidental visitor to the Outer Hebrides. Prior to 1990 it had only been seen three times - 1906, 1953 and 1980. The 1906 one remained near Stornoway for a week or two in May until it received the usual contemporary treatment and was shot. This year another one has appeared on Lewis for a couple of weeks in June, again at Loch Branahuie in Stornoway. We have not been fortunate enough to see it.
