New Year Resolutions – or not, as the case may be...

I’ve had visitors (well, family) staying for a few days and therefore got behind on a few things. Did much more exciting things instead. But, much to my surprise, the worlds in which my fellow bloggers live continued to turn. So I had a delightful couple of hours catching up with folk this morning. Another hour or so tonight and I should be up-to-date with what everyone has been up to, apart from making New Year Resolutions (or not as the mood has taken you).

I haven’t made a serious New Year resolution for years since I know I’d not last past the first few hours. I find resolutions are best made when one has just had one of those ‘Aha!’ moments in one’s life. You know the sort of thing. A resolution at midnight on 1st January to keep within the speed limit may or may not be kept but one made after seeing a child lying in the road, hit by a speeding car, surely will be.

The problem is that ‘Aha!’ moments are usually a Bad Thing in themselves. Like the fifth heart attack that finally makes you think your daily nicotine intake is not doing you much good. But occasionally they can be Good Things. One such occurred over Christmas as Jo and I were playing Scrabble. I cannot recall when we last played but I do know it took two bottles of de-griming liquid to clean the board.

We try, every Sunday morning, to sit down together and have a relaxed coffee and crossword but there seems little time the rest of the week to relax and do pointless but enjoyable things together. So my ‘Aha!’ moment led me to conclude that from now on I shall devote part of Sundays (when Jo has no clients and no lectures to give) to our partnership. I shall make every effort to sit down with Jo and do more than just have a quick coffee and crossword. Perhaps it will be Scrabble (to get my own back for the overall 2-1 defeat during the Christmas holidays). Perhaps it will be lighting the log fire and sitting there watching a television programme together. Whatever the ‘excuse’ I shall "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy" to our partnership.

  3. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I, like you, have had visitors over the holidays. I'm enjoying the catch-up as well.

I like your plan for cultivating some companionship. Having been widowed, and then marrying a widow, my wife and I savor the companionship more than most. It's as delightful as any garden, as lovely as any landscape, but more precious than either. Enjoy!
