Do you remember Pop-it beads from the 1950s? Mum had a chain of creamy white pop-its (which I always thought were called poppets until I tried Googling it) which she wore quite often. As a young child I used to love playing with them – either when they were around her neck or just on their own on a table. Great fun. Going through Mum’s jewellery box I came across them the other day. A real blast from the past and with the current trend for anything retro they are probably worth as much on E-bay as anything else in the jewel box! Not that I would part with them – too many memories.
We called them 'pop-em beads.' And I sure do remember.

I remember those!!! They were very fun to play with! I have to go through my mother's jewelry! What is really cool in her cedar chest is a fox stole. It still has the head and feet on it. I always loved that. Poor things! But as a kid, you never think about that.
ReplyDeleteThey actually sell a more inexpensive version these days-- I bought some for my granddaughter and she loved them.

ReplyDeleteShabby Girl, my Mum didn't have any fur but my Nana had a mink stole and muff - complete with half a dozen tails. I think it went to an auction years ago as part of one of the clear outs. Not that the auction paid anything - about £30 for half a house-full! If only E-bay had been around then.
Oh yes I remember them well and they were huge fun to play with...don't remember what we called them... don't remember calling them anything actually but they were so much fun they were certainly deserving a name. Thanks for the memories. Warm wishes, Vxx

ReplyDeleteThere are a few different sorts in my Mother's jewelry box. She would gather her three boxes and lay them out on the bed in her room, allowing the boys to search through treasures. She'd watch them and smile, pulling out the pieces and sharing her memories or favorites with us.

ReplyDeleteThe girls used to wear hooped petticoats - remember them! We had to be soooo careful how we sat down - sit on the back of the hoop and up would shoot the front of your skirt - oooooops! Thanks for the memories x
Thank you all for your comments - it's great to find subjects which excite such interest. I remember brothel creepers (I feel a blog posting coming on), Spesh, but hooped petticoats! I thought I'd only dreamed about them!
