ABC Wednesday - L is for Lar Gibbon

I've decided to do some postings conforming to the rules of ABC Wednesday. I hope you enjoy them. The first is the letter L...

L is for Lar Gibbon (Hylobates lar), also known as the white-handed gibbon.   It is one of the better-known gibbons and is often seen in zoos.

Historically, the range of the Lar Gibbon extended from southwest China to Thailand and Burma down the whole Malay Peninsula and the northwest portion of the island of Sumatra. It is found in primary and secondary tropical rain forests. In recent decades the continental range has been reduced and fragmented, and the animals are thought to be extirpated in China.

I hope you enjoyed my ABC Wednesday and if so, perhaps you might like to visit some others by clicking on the ABC Wednesday badge.

  1. Umm... I am confused here for two reasons: 1. it is Tuesday today, not Wednesday (I think...?) 2. why is the Lar Gibbon also known as Whitehand Gibbon, when the pictures so clearly show that it has black hands?

  2. The face on this charming creature seems a touch human. Not sure what to read from its gaze, though.

  3. we still have a "L"ot to "L"earn from them though

  4. Librarian - the reason for early posting is like my Friday My Town Shoot-out is sometimes early. If I know I won't be able to be on the computer in the morning I have to do it the night before because the Link on the ABC Wednesday / FMTS has to point to the posting not the blog and you can't point to the posting until it's posted!
    Sorry if it's confusing!
As for the name Whitehand I am as confused as you!

aka Penelope - I think it looks pretty sad myself.

  8. Your photos are very clear and beautiful. I have never seen a live Lar Gibbon and I hardly know anything about this interesting animal. Thanks for sharing this.

  10. Not really confusing. I post my entries a day or two early too.

I only see them at zoo and I think they are beautiful creatures!

Lessons at Home is one of my entries.

  11. Pretty gibbon, great shots swinging through the trees. I always find primates eyes fascinating, even more so framed by the white hair here.

  13. Well hello, good evening and welcome aboard ABC Wednesday! Loved this post and then I looked a bit further and recognised the Lake District which is just next door to us - way hey! So lovely to see a neighbour onboard of this wonderful Wednesday adventure.
Thanks for joining in - look forward to seeing you hop aboard when you feel moved.

  14. He does have a melancholic looking face.
I would love to see these creatures swinging from tree to tree.
I googled Lar Gibbon and it seems the rest of their body fur can be any shade from white to dark brown, but their hands are always white.

    Oh, and welcome!

  16. It's Wednesday in Australia when it's Tuesday here.
As my friend aka Penelope says, this is a charming creature. It is a shame it's on the endangered list.
Apparently, there are black Lar Gibbons, and they have white hands.

  17. I always think monkeys look cute (my husband definitely doesn't!) but then I think of perhaps smells, fleas etc. So maybe I'll stick with my cat. We have some things in common -- my husband comes from Liverpool, I also have a neurological problem that brings pain and fatigue. Thanks for visiting my blog.

  25. I must have seen one of them in a zoo here in my part of the world. The name Lar Gibbon, especially the 'lar' is a new (to me) vocabulary.

  26. Greetings fellow Libra!
What a sweet face on that exotic Lar Gibbon.

    Happy Wednesday!

  27. Lovely photos, especially the portrait shot.
in response to Librarian: Whitehand gibbons do have white(ish) hands, especially compared to other gibbon species, hence the name.

Thank you for your kind comment on my blog and for following. It's always good to meet librarians and fellow Pratchett-fans. Ook :)

  28. Hi Scriptor,

Great that you are on board, I really like this meme.

Your Gibbon reminded me of the 16 years I was living at a university campus in Singapore. They were clearing the jungle round us, the monkeys were invaded and they in turn invaded our homes.

I don't always post on Wednesday, besides, we are already a day ahead.

    Watch any rugby?

  29. Sorry Ann - not a rugby fan! I vaguely know there used to be (still is?) an English player called Johnny Wilkinson. I think that's the sum total of my rugby knowledge.
