A fluted letter box


A very rare 1856 fluted pillar box I photographed in Birkenhead recently – note that the slit is vertical.


This 1857 example of a similar letter box from Solihull shows that the door is round to the rear.


But by then the slit had been turned to the horizontal which is how it has remained ever since..
