Caps
This strange object was among Uncle Eric’s effects. It is about 1½ inches in diameter. On the outside is a little lever and when you open it up it has a little mechanism which fired caps.
Do you remember caps – those little rolls of tiny gunpowder blobs in a strip of red paper? We used to get them from the local newsagent / tobacconist and fire them in our cap guns. I presume this little device was a substitute for a starting pistol or something of that ilk.
