Hemlines

Women's hemlines go up as the economy gets better. They stay put when nothing happens in commerce. They go down when business drops off. The question is why. It seems that nobody knows the answer but the record indicates the pattern dates back more than 65 years.

So it looks like we'll be seeing a lot of maxi-skirts this summer! Indeed, the way the economy is going there'll be girls tripping over their hemlines. For 'leg-men' like me that is very sad news...

  3. Wow, what an interesting post, Scriptor - I'd never heard of this phenomena before. It does seem to be true!

  4. I have and I abhor depressions. However it does not seem to apply in New Zealand: the land of long (and visible) legs.

  5. My husband is not a leg man. This is fortunate as I have legs like Ernie Wise. He would like you to provide information on how the economic downturn will affect neck lines.

    Yours sincerely

  6. Hello Dulce Dorum (aka Busty StC) - I am unaware of any research into economic situations and necklines. Perhaps your husband could apply for a grant to undertake some? Asuuming the grant would also cover living accomodation as you would probably throw him out...

  7. In summary: hemlines follow the economy, underwear follows global temperatures, and the status of necklines is undetermined as of now. Any other garment?

  8. :) My dear, the OLDER I get, the longer my hemline.

And this from the girl who received a detention in high school for too short skirts! :)

  9. Thank you Archduchess for making a reference to a previous post of mine about which I had totally forgotten - http://scriptorsenex.blogspot.com/2009/01/cynics.html

As to the question you pose - I would suggest men's ties as another potential area for study but am not aware of any research on them. Do they, for example, get jazzier when times are bad as some form of compensation?

And Tracy, my Mum was reprimanded in school for having a gym slip that was too short and that was in the early 1920s!

  10. We used to have to kneel down at school and if our skirts didn't touch the floor we'd get detention!

  11. Dulce Dorum, that's exactly how my Mum's gym slip was measured in the 1920s. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose! I remember her telling me because it seemed a bit short and daring to me.
