The Snow

On Tuesday it snowed. And it snowed a bit more. And then it snowed seriously. In Warrington there were 8 inches of snow but in Liverpool and on the Wirral we only had two inches. Nevertheless the whole North West ground to a halt with absolute chaos on the roads. Liverpool has run out of money to grit the roads so even the main roads were just sheets of ice and lorries were jackknifed, cars abandoned and lots of accidents blocking all the major routes into the city. Meanwhile the Wirral is down to two days supply of grit and cannot get any more at the moment.

Jo took me to the hospital for my tests and although the journey was bad we managed to use the side roads to avoid the main chaos. Until we got to the hospital in Liverpool. Jo dropped me off and I went for my tests. It took her an hour and a half to park the car – the place was in such chaos. We left half an hour later with all my tests done and dusted and came back over to the Wirral.

The view from The Anchor window.

Then we went for a meal at The Anchor,  a pub in Irby, and while we were there another inch or so of snow fell.

Warm and cosy by the pub fire.

Outside the pub car park an accident had occurred, cars were abandoned and no one had been able to get on to our road home.

Jo just drove around everyone like the professional that she is and got us home at a safe and easy pace. And that’s without four-wheel drive!

Passing the woods near home.

And back home, it was not an afternoon to sit out in the garden!

And when you have snow in the garden you have to have a Robin to go with it!

Today, Wednesday, the roads are deserted and Police have asked that no one go into work unless it is essential. All the buses are off the road for the day. As a result there’s hardly anyone on the roads at all.

A Pied Wagtail decided to take advantage of the lack of cars and wandered across the road outside our house.

Jo and I went for a walk to the local woods and took some photos and have been snapping away at the snow in the garden all day. It is now freezing again (minus 10°C is forecast for tonight) and the roads are icing up on top of the snow. All non-emergency hospital appointments have been cancelled so I don’t know if my appointment with the specialist will be on tomorrow or not – I’ll have to ring in the morning and see. In the meantime, apart from Jo losing money because of having to cancel all her clients, it’s been a great day. Sorry everyone but I love the snow.

  2. What an awful day to have to go out for tests. We've got icy conditions down to an art where I live but we're born to it and have huge budgets and emergency crews waiting to go. Let's hope every one who can enjoys their day off. Great photos too. Take care.

  3. Looks very familiar somehow... ;)
    (Same kind of weather here!)

Nice picture of your Christmas tree with all the snow outside!

And as usual I'm envious of the bird photos (I don't get close enough with my camera...)

  5. I love snow too...and your photos!! The birds are perfect, the snow is as beautiful in the UK as it is here in my little old Vermont, USA :) and I'm glad that you're both safe in your adventures.

Hoping the tests go well and all of your appointments are timely.

  6. All this snow looks very pretty but I am not sure that it is pretty enough to justify the chaos that it is causing, bringing the country to a standstill. When I was a child, growing up in Yorkshire, I never missed a day of school because of snow and my father never had a day off work and it snowed every winter.

A Happy New Year to you!

  7. Tell Jo we think she's wonderful! Driving in messy slippery snow is not easy and to get home with all her fenders intact proves she's ready for Formula One or Top Gear!
I'm glad you like the snow, Scriptor. I would be very hard put to find anything pleasant to say about it if we had that amount of it here, but then, you always seem to find something nice to say about things. :0)
Good luck with your appts. tomorrow.
    Take care and God bless,
love to both you and Jo,

  8. It makes me happy to hear that you're enjoying the snow. You've done such a wonderful job with your photos - YOU get the Excellence in Photography Award this week. The Robin is precious. I like American Robins as well but they aren't as pretty as your English ones. Congrats to Jo on the superb driving skills, she should tackle a Canadian winter sometime.

  9. The photos are beautiful. Glad you were able to stay on the road.

You must be getting all our snow. Just a bit on the ground here.

  10. Really great pictures and a blog that left me feeling I was wandering around with you. The pub seemed warmer than ever because of the surrounding white. The Christmas tree also looked great with the snow outside...and you handled the inside-outside lighting challenge beautifully!

  11. Sorry, I hit "send" before I was finished.

Just wanted to add -- Lovely photo of Jo in the pub, and great photo of the robin. Thanks for sharing your beautiful pix.

Our niece from Essex is here visiting, and flies back to Heathrow on Jan. 12th -- assuming Heathrow is open then. If she does leave, I'm not sure how her sister is going to get from Essex to the airport to collect her. Things which seem managable during decent weather can become real obstacles during a time like this, so I guess we'll have to hope for the best.

Hope all goes well with your doctor's appt.
Take care, stay warm, talk soon.

  12. The snow looks beautiful! Where I live now it is a miracle if we get snow to even stick on the ground. But only 30 minutes away there is FEET of snow in the mountains. I grew up in SNOW, the winter Olympics were once in Salt Lake City some years back, and the snow is beautiful there, well until the machines and cars make it look so dirty. I love SNOW-IN days where you just sit at home and just relax! HOpe all went well with your tests! be sure to let us know! hugs to you my friend...and best wishes!

  13. Thank you for all the kind comments and for the "Award", Elaine - I must get back to doing it this Sunday. I think the snow is so beautiful it would make anyone a photographer. Shame it goes to black and slushy before it goes.

  14. I always say around here if it is going to snow make it a blizzarrd so we have an adventure. I don't want a little of the messy nuisance, just give me a full blown blizzard. I would have loved to have been in that pub too, watching it snow with a drink by the fire.

Glad Jo is a good driver, I expected to read you were stranded at the pub!
