There is a pub in the back streets of Liverpool not far from Chinatown that goes by the name of Pogue Mahone.
The Pub sign gives no real clue as to the meaning of the pub’s name. it is an anglicized version of the Irish slang “póg mo thóin” which means, quite simply, kiss my arse!
When I first went to live in the Outer Hebrides in 1975 it was a favourite passtime of colleagues with the Gaelic to tell incomers that usual form of greeting was Pog mo thoin or, in Gaelic of course, 'Did you get it last night?'
