Gloucester

We visited Gloucester - briefly - on our way down to Daughter-who-takes-photos a fortnight ago.



It was raining on and off but that didn't stop me getting a few photos.

    Don't think I've ever been to Gloucester, but that's a beautiful cathedral and your photos are perfect.

    Beautiful photos. Thanks. A question: The two sculptures you focused on (it looks like like they may stand on both sides of the arch) look newer than their surroundings. Do you know if they have been restored or are they more recent than the rest of the building? Just curious.

      Judging by similar sculptures at Exeter Cathedral I should say they have almost certainly been restored. But usually they have the drawings of the original ones in the archives and are sculpted exactly as they would have been.

    These huge old cathedrals always give me very mixed feelings... On the one hand, really awesome works of art... and on the other hand, "too much of a good thing"...! Love the close-up photos of the statues and details. Back in the days I was travelling (I never visited Gloucester I think, but I have evidence of having been to Wells!)... I did not have a camera that could zoom in...

    The Cathedral is breathtakingly lovely. As you know, I am a "church nut" and will definitely have to add it to my "to see" list. Love the two street scene photos too. The top one, with the cyclist, would be a wonderful "calendar" photo.

    BTW - when our daughter was small, my sister-in-law lived on Foster Street in New Westminster, BC. When drove up to see her, Arlene would sing,
    "Dr. Foster when to Gloucester
    In a shower of rain
    He stepped in a puddle
    Right up to his muddle
    And never was seen again!"

    Strange how these silly things stick in one's mind!

    You ought to think about collating your photos into a coffee table book and hawking it in the U.S. of A. I'm telling you, it would sell.

    Stunning architecture on the cathedral...the craftmanship that went into all the details of the facades of these old buildings always fascinates me.
