Here on holiday on Lewis there is one main topic of conversation with which folk greet each other. It is not the weather - despite that being exceptionally fine at the moment - it is the queues in the Co-op.
The only other supermarket in Stornoway, Somerfield’s, has closed pending it being turned into a Tesco. The site is supposedly being enlarged and all sorts of works are rumoured to be in the offing but the new store will not be opening for a couple of months. In the meantime everyone is having to shop in the Co-op. We have managed to go there when it has been fairly quiet but the check-out queues at peak times are said to be horrendous. In the meantime, by forcing everyone into the Co-op for so long one wonders if Tesco have laid down their own banana skins for the future!
