Monday 13th

Going to sleep on a Sunday causes Monday. And this month Friday 13th also fell on a Monday.  So I wasn't overly surprised to find another disaster occurring today.  I say 'another' because I'd already had about five in the last six or seven days.

Today started with a migraine at 3a.m. as most days do but a couple of paracetomol and codeine, a marol and a sumatriptan started to diminish it and a cup of tea and some toast (provided by Rich and Jo who were both wandering around the kitchen at 4 a.m.) finished it off. So when I got out of bed at 6.35 I felt fine.

Until I put my right foot on the floor at which stage I recalled that my bursitis from Friday had not got any better. For those who don't know, bursitis is excess fluid and usually occurs on the knee (water on the knee) or elbow (tennis elbow). I have lacked a right kneecap for over fifty years since I had a motor accident. Consequently, if I kneel for any length of time I get bursitis which is a painful swelling. You would think that 54 years would be long enough for me to learn not to kneel. Silly you if you really think that. And no, water on the knee is not cured by a tap on the ankle!

Anyway, I swore my way downstairs and Jo and I went out shopping.  My first trip outside the gate for about ten days and my first trip beyond the local postbox for over three weeks. Jo did all the shopping while I stayed in the car.  She has been doing every bit of shopping since February and most of it for the last couple years. But that's OK because she loves it.  I mean hates it.  Absolutely hates it. Unless there are clothes or books involved.

We got home and unpacked the shopping and then drove to West Kirby with a view to having our first café visit since February.

A cappuccino and a sausage toastie later we headed back home.

I took my keys, etc., out of my pockets and thought 'That's interesting. No wallet.'  It was then I remembered the date. The 13th.

A few phone calls later and none of the shops we'd been near had got it. Jo then had to head off to work.  We agreed to leave it to 5pm before phoning to cancel all my cards.

At 1.30pm a young lady called Nicky from Hoylake arrived at the door with my wallet in her hand. Not only had she been caring enough to bring it well out of her way but she seemed as delighted as me to have reunited us.

There are some good folk around.

And perhaps Monday 13th isn't as bad as Friday 13th after all.  How did your day go?

  1. Wow, I'm glad for you that your Monday 13th got a happy ending after all :) Mine has been quite undramatic, really. I wrote one postcard and went out and posted that; and then bought an ice cream at the convenience store (by the letterbox) and sat down on a bench and ate that before I returned back home. It was very short walk, because I have a knee playing tricks on me at times as well; and just now it seems to be saying that it thinks I've been walking a bit too much lately. So today I kept close to home! (Getting up to check my handbag... Yes - my wallet is still there!) :)

  2. Monday the 13th and I hadn't even noticed. I mean I had realised it was Monday because yesterday was Sunday. The only reason I need dates is to put them on letters and although I sent two this morning I couldn't even have told you the year I wrote.

The kindness of folk leads me to think there may be some hope for mankind.

How was my day? Pretty much the same as the last 120 except the weather was a bit crappier for July.

    1. I sometimes guess at the date for letters but don't tell anyone.

  3. Hot. Lots of work. Some of it outdoors, including scrubbing the dead bugs off a client's car. Did i mention it's hot in the swamps? How thankful i am, though, that i have work.

    1. I would probably enjoy identifying the bugs but you can keep the heat, please.

  4. Three cheers for Nicky from Hoylake!! Yes, there are some good folk around. We just must not let the bad 'uns become the majority.
My Monday 13th did actually go very well. My train was on time, work went fine, the weather was great and I very much enjoyed my after-work walk before having a nice salad of baby spinach leaves and watching some cosy TV (Shakespeare & Hathaway), then reading a few pages before lights out at 11 pm.

  5. There is this expression in French: "Tout est bien qui finit bien", meaning that everything is ok if it is ok in the end. I don't know the equivalent in English.

    1. I think the equivalent may be "It will all come out in the wash".

  6. Glad you got your wallet back - what a relief!

So Jo doesn't like food shopping or shopping in general? I never knew that.

    1. It was an enormous relief.
Yes, Jo doesn't like shopping, especially for food. I enjoy it but having no transport I can only do a tiny bit at a time.

    2. I too enjoy food shopping. When someone else goes there's no opportunity for ad libbing and buying something seasonal or that takes one's fancy in the moment. I miss that.

  7. My Monday the 13th was OK since I got off work a bit early. I was still tired from our trip to Chicago for my Mom's memorial gathering with family. So getting out of work early was good! I just finished a book called "Orphan Sisters" about 2 sisters in England during WWII. It was good but also sad and I don't know how people survived the bombings and rationing that had to be done back then. But the British are tough aren't they! I hope that knee feels better soon. Take care John!

    1. I hope the memorial gathering went as well as these things can.
I guess folk everywhere just realise they have to get on with things, have a good whinge with the neighbours and hope for better times to come.

  8. On Monday the 13th I worked on my taxes. In the U.S. they are due on the 15th so it was a relief to get them done. I also went to Macy's. I don't like to shop, but I was just happy to be someplace where everything seemed so normal except that we were all wearing masks. The truth is tears came to my eyes when I walked inside.
In the early evening I went to the playground. They just opened them in NYC. It was wonderful seeing all the children running around playing. Wearing masks but at least able to have some fun.
Sorry that you are having so many health issues and hope you can find some pain relief.

  9. What a nice way to have the reunion with your wallet, brought to your door by a caring woman.
