Happy Chinese New Year

Tomorrow we leave the Year of the Dragon and enter the Year of the Snake.

May it be a good one for all of you.

This wonderful cartoon is  by Thao Bui of the University of Oregon

to request permission to  use this - I hope they won't mind.

If you fancy making a chinese paper lantern here is just one of many YouTube videos to help you -

Or perhaps you are old enough to recall making paper chains at Christmas?  In which case you could make a paper snake for the grandchildren!

Or you could simply have a Snake on your computer for the week (from Good Wallpapers) (click image to enlarge) -

  3. Hmm...Year of the snake doesn't bode too well for us round here. The main snakes we get are rattle snakes! It's the season for them right now. As the temperatures warm up so do they.

  4. For years I had a real one - a red tailed boa named Slash. I've recently been considering acquiring another. This may just be the year!

  7. Hi,
The year of snake started on January 1st in Japan. Yes, this custom in Japan is based on Chinese one. I love the snake illustration which is so lovely!! Scales of a snake are depicted in the shape of a triangle. How to make a paper lantern interested me very much.
    Have a great week.

    1. I didn't realise the Japanese had a similar calendar, based on the Chinese one, but starting in 1st January. I must remember that.

  8. Happy New Year to you John! I remember when my son was a missionary in Taiwan and it was a noisy and busy time during Chinese New Year. He said it would get so crazy on the streets at night that he would throw eggs out his window at the revelers to quiet them down! I love the paper chain snakes..great idea!
