Friday My Town Shoot--out - Bridges

It's a long time since I took part in the Friday My Town Shoot--out and I may not be a regular contributor but I thought I'd put some UK bridges on this week's blog.

When I visit Daughter-who-takes-photos I often cross the Severn Bridge over the estuary of the River Severn between Wales and England. (It's free going from Wales to Englnad
with an expensive toll going from England to Wales... go figure!)

In Exeter, Devon, where Daughter-w-t-p lives there are lots of bridges over the River Exe and its tributaries.

If we travel further South-west into Cornwall there are some ancient clapper bridges still to be found.

And although this was taken by my father, not me, I thought I'd show you the small railway bridge near my parents' house in Liverpool being widened in the 1940s.

If you want to see other bridges around the world why not visit the

I'm sure there will be some super photos on the various blogs linked to that page...

Friday My Town Shoot-out - being Thankful

This week's Friday My Town Shoot-out is about being Thankful. It is Thanksgiving Day in Canada on October 10 and we are invited to show "something you have discovered in your town or something you are thankful for in your town".

Firstly, I have to be thankful for my children.

This one still lives with us in our town.

Chef at work...  Cooking is a serious business...

But I decided I was also very thankful for the birds.

The birds that nest in the garden like Blue Tits.

And those that just visit for a meal like the Goldfinch families.

A Grey Heron popped in for a meal once, landing by the ponds and grabbing a frog which it threw up in the air and tried to catch again.  It missed and the frog survived!

Some birds, like this Herring Gull,  just fly over and don't land but their calls remind me of the sea or the seasons.

The Robins not only nest in the garden but entertain us in spring and autumn with their song.

To see what other folk are thankful for in their towns please click on this link.

(It would be nice to be thankful for a brain/memory but I can't say that at the moment.  I've had what GB indelicately refers to as a brain-fart and entered my link twice.  If the team have yet to delete it my apologies to anyone who is confused by it.)

Friday My Town Shoot--out - Hot or Cold

This week's Friday My Town Shoot-out theme is - Hot or Cold.

In the foreground is the Spiegelei - a perspective altering work in which a three-way camera obscura projects a 360 degree upside down visin of the Japanese garden. Unfortunately the weather was too dull for it work when we were there.

In the background of the top photo  is "A Weight of Ice Carried from the North for You".   Neville Gabie travelled to the Arctic in February 2010 to harvest this 10,000 year old piece of ice.

This highly experimental work in the gardens of Tatton Park  queries the issues of global trade and sustainability.

The freezer cabinet is kept cold by means of 12 solar panels and a heat exchange unit in the nearby Golden Brook.

Why not check out other people's my town shoot-outs this week.
