A cushion

This cushion cover was made by my grandmother.  It is composed of small remnants of material  from various bits of dress-making, embroidery, and other crafts in which she took part.

Sadly some of the pieces are very worn and so I can't use the cushion, especially with the cats around.  And I'm not a good enough seamstress (or whatever the male equivalent is) to be able to just cover the worn out pieces and do such good stitching around the edges of the new inserts.

Any suggestions, anyone?

  1. Lovely colours, very autumn-like. Do you remember some of the dresses and other items the fabric pieces have come from?
I'm afraid I am not at all a craftswoman or seamstress and therefore can not give you any useful advice. If there is a shop in your town where they offer tailoring services, repairs etc., maybe they can help.

    1. Yes, I remember some of the garments, curtains, etc. That is part of what makes it so special to me.

  2. I don't recognise the type of stitches, but they're very pretty.

  3. Can you find someone who preserves old fabrics, perhaps someone who often works for museums? Or display it in a glass case just the way it is.

  4. Check for a tailor in the area. Surely a cleaning establishment might be able to give you a reference? If it is sentimentally important pay the money.

    1. Sadly our experience of tailors has not been good in the past so I wouldn't like to risk it.

  5. It's lovely to see the cushion. As you said using it with cats around isn't a realistic option and it's difficult to think of another use for a cushion. Unstuffing it and framing it would rather defeat its purpose in life.

    1. I think framing it might be the best option, GB.

  6. You could put a lace/mesh cover over it. You would still be able to see the pattern and it would give it some protection. But it won't protect it from cats. It's beautiful. You could put the pillow in a glass case and hang it on the wall. I can't think of anything else. Good luck.

  7. Thanks for all your suggestions. The most helpful one was probably from the friend who emailed suggesting locking the cats out of the house! Seriously, the idea of hanging it on the wall in a glass case is the most attractive so far.
