Help!

I am determined to learn how to use Facebook.  At the moment it is a complete mystery.  The main thing I want to be able to do is reach the page that shows me the latest news items from my friends.  I can’t find it.
The second thing I want to do is learn how to make friends with a business.  i.e. to have their latest posts show up on that elusive page as well.
For example.  I know that if I go to https://www.facebook.com/pages/Very-Vintage-Affairs/
I can see what is happening at Vintage Affairs .

But how do I get that to show up on my elusive friends goings on page?

  1. When you master fb they will change it on you. The most frustrating thing ever. But, for now, go to a friend's page that you want to see updates from. Click where it says Friends - under the banner. Choose 'Show in News Feed' from the list. Also, have them marked as a Friend. People marked as acquaintances don't give you as much coverage. If you don't want them in your feed, then unclick 'Show in News Feed'

For a business do the same thing.

If you really don't want to miss anything click 'Get Notifications', then you will get a message whenever that person/business posts. You can have it just post to your facebook notifications if you don't want an e mail every time. That is under notification settings somewhere.

I also find it helpful to keep my sort view set to "Most Recent" rather than "Top Stories" But for some reason, facebook likes you to see it as Top Stories and you have to keep updating it back to Most Recent. Sort VIew is found at the upper right of your feed in the Home view.

  2. To see the latest news from your friends click Home in top right hand corner - that is like your sitting room that all your visitors come into. To see your own place, as it were, click on Your Name on the left of Home and there are the posts which have gone out from you onto all your friends' pages - into their sitting room of their house as it were. My daughter had to explain this to me so you are not the only one who struggled with it :-) If you want to see all the Vintage Affairs pages on your page you have to make them a Friend I think... or Like - not too sure on that one. However you can SHARE any of their posts and they will then go onto all of your friends' pages. Hope that helps a little, someone else may explain it better.
Glad you liked my angel pic.

    1. Glad I wasn't the only one to have to ask! Thanks Cait.

  3. Can't help John. I joined in a moment of weakness/ innebriation. It pinches your address book and is very aggresive finding 'Friends?' for you.
Took me two or three days to get rid of it.
If you are into building little stables for ponies or indulging in puerile chat it is fine.

  4. Afraid I can't help you. I must be one of the few people left on the planet (well those with a computer anyway) who doesn't have a Facebook account. I'm staying off there on principal -- not sure what the principal is though!

  5. That is a good question, I will come back here and see if anyone answers it. One nice FB feature is that in addition to my many friends, I also created a small group called "close friends" where only their posts show up, if I visit that group.

  6. I get confused by Facebook as well. Seems you already got the basic tips from other comments I see here. You can actually choose rather specifically what kind of updates you want from each friend - go to the friends list (see Rebecca's comment) and click on Settings for each one. (Of course you don't HAVE to do it for each friend, but if you think you're seeing too little or too much of someone, it can be good to check those settings.) As for businesses, I think it's often enough to "like" their page and they will happily flood you with information...

    1. Yes, I can imagine being flooded by firms. It's just that this firm is run by a friend and is just getting off the ground so I'd like to keep abreast of how it's doing.

    2. I meant to say, thanks also for the useful tip about each friend's settings. One or two of my friends do tend to post rather a lot so I think it could be useful to filter theirs a bit or they will swamp everybody else. That's what seems to have happened in the past when I have managed to find the page.

    3. Yes it's like that for me too. With some friends very active on FB I've decided I don't really need to know every time they "like" another page, for example...

  7. Looks like you're all sorted. Just let us know if you have any further questions, xx

  8. I'm still getting the hang of Facebook myself, although I only visit about every fortnight.
The above comments are all helpful hints which I will use as well.

  9. Scriptor, how I share your frustration! After my kids urged me to join, I did! Only to discover that they ignore copy rights, so I'm not posting anymore on it, and I do the things, Rebecca, Cait, and Dawntreader do. The email notifications help greatly too to decide if I even want to look at their whole story!
Also, I've discovered that LinkedIn is only for business people (or make believe-business) if you're more interested in that. Many are both on FB and LinkedIn.
Last but not least, thanks for your comments on my Artistique blog:)

  10. Use FB with extreme caution. Privacy and all that, you know.

The spirit of facebook is to talk about yourself incessantly using a disorganized, whimsical methodology. 'Methodology' isn't quite the correct word here, but it's late and I'm sick with the crud. Anyway, facebook was invented by a very bright fellow who loved himself and found himself interesting, and so wanted to share this with everyone. That's just one facet of his generosity, the others being the sharing of your personal information with everyone, including some long lost relatives who have ended up in the Philippines and need $2,500 US dead presidents to get out of the sneezer.

I never fail to enjoy reading your blog, by the way. I find it very cheering, which is what I need these days.
