A couple of British Lizards

I have taken lots of photos of Common or Viviparous Lizards (Zootoca vivipara).   This is from a slide I took in Delamere Forest, Cheshire,  in 1983.

Someone caught this one and a small boy in our party (which was really hunting butterflies) displayed it for photos.

That same day I caught another one and the same young boy held it for me (very carefully) while I photographed it.  (They were, of course, released, totally unharmed.)

The next two are from a walk in Devon in 2015.

Although the quality of the slide below is nowhere near as good I am equally pleased with it because it is of the very rare Sand Lizard (Lacerta agilis)  I  have only ever seen a couple and to have managed to get any sort of photo pleased me no end.

The Sand Lizard is a threatened species and is strictly protected under UK law – as it is throughout most of Europe (it is a European Protected Species).

I am very fond of Lizards and one day may show you some of my many lizard photos from around the world, taken in zoos.

  2. I am very fond of lizards, too, and am always extraordinarily pleased when I spot one of those living on my parents' allotment.
My first husband was from Sicily, and we spent every summer on the island for about 10 years. There, you can't leave the house without coming across lizards at every corner, and sometimes they oome into the house, too.

  4. You'd love taking photos at my mom's place in North Carolina - she has loads of lizards, and snakes too, out on her property. Lovely blue-striped lizards, and tiny wee frogs with suction cup feet that climb the porch railings and have HUGE voices at night!

  5. I like these lizard photos and I can appreciate the last ones since I now know who rare it is to see a sand lizard!
I must remember to try and get a photo of the skinks that we often see right out on our front porch. If I am able, I will put the photo on my blog!

  6. I also enjoy lizards and other reptiles and I feel very sill that, up to the present time, I have never put the ideas of "Britain" and "lizards" together.

  7. Yes there is something fascinating about the prehistoric ancestry of lizards. Apart from that I think they are very attractive creatures.

  8. I'm trying to remember if I've ever seen any lizards at all "live" (not counting zoos, although I'm not sure about that either). Perhaps a few, but if I did, I have no photos to prove it...

  9. I hope you released the little boy back into the wild, too, Clive.
