Stonehenge

You would hardly expect 4500 year old Stonehenge to have changed much since I took this photo in the 1960s.  But it has.  The ancient monument is now fenced off and no longer can one just wander around among the stones as we used to in those days.

Although this is one of my better photos of the monument there were too many people around for there to be much atmosphere.  On another occasion I visited, it was a wet, dark day and the stones were not photogenic but the absence of people made it really feel as old as time.

  1. Oh I would have loved to have wandered amongst the stones. It was all very touristy when we visited.

  4. What I noticed had definitely changed is photo quality! Your image really does have a 60's feel to it!

  5. I totally understand that just a few people made it a much different experience! I hope to see Stonehenge one day!

    1. Will do, thanks. Although in this case the people do give an idea of the scale of the stones! They are massive.

    2. Agreed, but everyone knows they're massive, so the removal of a few unwanted tourists won't hurt. *wink* I've removed loads of unwanted tourists from my photos over the years! Nothing kills the romance of a photo like unwanted tourists, eh?

  7. Oddly enough although I find the number of people at Callanish when I'm trying to take photos in the 'best' photographic conditions when, of course, everyone else is, a bit irritating it's much better than when they tried to ban people from being in amongst the stones. (What a terrible sentence that was).

    1. Agreed! But, thanks to the miracle that is Photoshop, we don't have to have unwanted strangers in our lovely photos amongst the Callanish stones - or Stonehenge, for that matter! Same goes for you, GB - if you have any photos you'd like strangers removed from, just send them along to me and I'd be happy to do it!
