All things share the same breath...

"All things share the same breath - the beast, the tree, the man, the air shares its spirit with all the life it supports." - Chief Seattle

I wonder if that applies to a Cheshire Cat as well?

For the last year or so this one has been climbing a tree outside Avanti, one of our favourite coffee shops in Heswall.  Just by its tree is this work of ‘art’ (?), of which we have, as yet, not found out the meaning.

Birkenhead & Liverpool

At the start of the month I spent a morning in Birkenhead.  From the pier coffee shop there is a great view of the Liverpool waterfront across the river.

The clock on the Royal Liver building is one of the largest in the world.  It has four faces – three on the front tower of the 295’ high, seventeen storey, building and one on the back tower.  Each face has a diameter of 25  feet.  The minute hands are fourteen feet long and each hand is 5 hundredweight in weight.

The Roman Catholic cathedral is visible across the Mersey.

As is the Anglican one.

The ferry T.S.M.V. Snowdrop  (formerly the Woodchurch) was built in 1959 and is the sister ship of the Royal Iris.

Only a few hundred yards from the Birkenhead pier head is Gallaghers, one of the country’s most unusual pubs.

It isn’t just a pub it is also a barber’s shop.

And more sport

Sorry but I can’t resist mentioning that Liverpool FC beat Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford.  No wonder Steven Gerrard kissed the camera!

Just 26!

  1. Great and varied post here today; Cheshire cat and unusual pub where they also cut hair.

  2. love the look around! and haha! I remember the feeling of passing notes in class or even just writing a note and not looking and paying close attention to the teacher. things are surely different now!

  3. The Cheshire Cat and Mosaic Heart were part of Heswall Arts Festival 2013. They were made and placed there by the students and staff from the Heswall Centre in Telegraph Road. We work with Special Needs Adults and some very inspiring and brilliant work is done in the centre. Well worth a visit, its imbetween Ambulance Station and Doctors Surgery.

    1. Thanks Cath. Apologies if my (?) offended anyone - it's just a personal view. Art means such different things to different people. The heart is skilful even if it's not to my taste. But I love the Cheshire Cat!
Perhaps it would be useful to have some sort of explanation on the railings.

    2. Yes that would be a good idea next time the we exhibit anything around Heswall. I'll mention that to them and of course it would be good publicity for the Centre. I think the Cheshire Cat is just great too !

  5. Ferry cross the Mersey...now, I will be singing this all evening!!
And oh, those wonderful 26 letters! My biggest goal of my childhood was to learn to read. Okay, I got there, and I haven't gone any further! HA!!

  6. What a splendid post CJ. Not that they aren't usually but this one sort of caught my nostalgic interest in general and the 26 letter combination one particularly made me think of how many other alphabets there are in this world and what clever people the Chinese have to be just to remember their 'alphabet'.

  7. A pub and a barber's all in one? How do they avoid getting hair into their drinks?

  8. All familiar scenes these. My hubby is a 'whacker'. We lived in Liverpool on Breck Road for a year before uprooting to Canada -- later to the States.

  9. thanks for sharing the eclectic variey! I do love that with those 26 letters so varied are the stories and other written words are possible. what an unusual combination with the barber and bartender in the same place! I hope that the hair cutting is well away from where the drinks are poured. I abhor hair in a drink or my food!

  11. I quite like that heart - even before reading the comment above. To me it looks a bit like a globe - except that's it's the wrong shape ;) What I mean is that it could be interpreted to be a heart-shaped earth, with those circles representing continents, and the blue curles like ocean currents between them. And I could go on to ponder about possible symbolism of the circles or wheels, and all the little pieces of mosaic as well. People being different but still part of the same, land and resources divided and shared - etc, etc.

  12. I like the book/alphabet quote even if the number of signs or letters may vary between languages. In Swedish we treat å, ä and ö as separate letters, but count w to be the same as v (and call it "double v" rather than "double u") - w is only used here in some names. So our alphabet has 28 letters.

  13. Love the pub and barber. It's like some of the beauty salons that offer wine while getting a haircut. Nice. How do you take your coffee?

  14. Does the barber enjoy a pint at the pub too? Let's hope it's after he has finished cutting his clients' hair. I like the idea of a two-for-one shop....very nice.
I can't get over the size of the clock face you highlighted....twenty five feet is HUGE.
I'm glad you're feeling better because I get to enjoy lovely posts like this one....thanks.

  17. Such beautiful scenery with lovely blue and sunny skies! All the quotes are great but the last statement brought back a memory from school. When I was in 6th grade my French teacher was a real beast..she and I just didn't get along. One day a paper with some nasty comments about her was being passed around the class. You guessed it, I got caught with the note and I hadn't even written anything on it! (got caught before I had a chance! Ha!) Anyway, she was livid and I was chewed out and then I said a few things about her that didn't go over very well. Ahhh, the beauty of the written word..while being passed around a class of 12yr olds! Thanks for the memory!
