I think you do put a question mark on because a question is a question, rhetorical or not! How do you decide which books to read? do you all have to go out and buy your own copies? I suppose you do.
This first meeting we are just talking about the book we are currently reading - whatever it may be. (Or, if they are like me, one of the books they are currently reading since I have about four on the go at any one time). I think we will then choose to read the same book for the next meeting but those are the sorts of things to be decided at the meeting. I hadn't thought about the expense but presumably, yes, we'll each have to buy a copy.
Have fun! I've never been in a book club, but I think they are far more widespread in the UK than in Germany anyway. If I lived in Ripon, I am quite sure I'd be part of the Civic Society as well as of some book club or other. When it comes to rhetorical questions, I always put a question mark at the end.
As noted above, we will select our own book for the first meeting and I'll let you know what happens after that. I shall probably talk about the Robyn Young Brethren Trilogy.
I wish I knew the answer to your grammatical question. I find so many instances of these kind of grammatical unknowns, i get quite frustrated with myself. As an English teacher, aren't I supposed to know the answers to these? I don't think I was ever taught this kind of thing..
A Book Club sounds like fun. I couldn't do that, like Yaya above, maybe if I ever get to retire. I don't have to think about the question mark, I can see your brother's comment! HA!
It seems to me that you should not use a question mark. You should use a period because the sentence is a statement. i.e. "I wonder what it will be like." "What will it be like, I wonder." is a straight-forward statement of your feelings.
Leslie, the Canadian, eh btw, I don't seem to have access to any of the profile options offered.
Hello - thanks for dropping by to leave a comment. Your comments are much appreciated even if I don't always reply. They will appear as soon as they have been moderated.
I am using Instagram and Facebook a lot more nowadays and sometimes they are replacing my posts on the blog. If you want to follow me on Instagram my address is @cjohnedwards. On Facebook I can be found at Clive John Edwards but you will need to send me a request to follow me as it is not open to the public.
Yes. I researched it once.
ReplyDeleteWell done, GB - I should have realised you'd know the answer.

You might as well put a question mark there, because the answer is still unknown! Maybe especially because it is rhetorical, it remains unanswered.
ReplyDeleteEither way, enjoy the club!
Do tell us when you know more! :) What will you be reading?
