Blue Monday

How are you today?  The odds are you aren’t that great because today is ‘Blue Monday’.  The third Monday of the year has been calculated by psychologist Cliff Arnail to be the day on which we are at our lowest ebb.  On what he has based this supposition one does not know.

Perhaps it’s to do with the failed New Year resolutions that have come home to roost or the weather with its gales and snow and floods.  Maybe the prospect of summer just seems at its furthest from us.  Or the receipt of the bank and credit card statements after the Christmas spending may contribute.  How about getting on the scales after the Christmas binge – is that a factor?   The dark trip to work and the dark trip home can’t help, can they?  Lack of exercise and staying indoors (because of that weather again) may make us feel grotty.

Or perhaps Blue Monday is simply something the travel agents have dreamed up to make us get that summer holiday booked.

Whatever, perhaps you should have an early night and console yourself that it can only get better from here on in…

  1. It looks as if it will be blue monday all right. The Seattle Seahawks are having a helluva time with the San Francisco 49'r's. And if they lose this game, as looks entirely possible, they go home. If they win they go to the Super Bowl for only the second time in the team's history. And last time, they lost the game because of a blown call by a ref. I kid you not -- six months later, the ref in question went on TV and admitted he blew it and cost Seattle the game apologised for it. Of course a fat lot of good that did -- game over, Pittsburg Steelers got the win. This looked as if it would be the year that we finally got to avenge that loss. But apparently not. Time is running out, and the 49'r's are leading.....damn, damn, damn. Of well. What's that you say? It's only a game!! Ha!!

    1. Liverpool drew (and only just managed that) at home this weekend. We needed the points from a win if we are to keep up our hopes of playing in Europe next year. I'm blue!

    2. Ouch! So sorry. I understand better than most, the agony for the fans when things go wrong. Take care and God bless, xoxox

  2. I can relate to feeling blue after hopping on the scale, that's for sure.

  3. Well, I will be damned. The Seahawks won! 23-17. We're going to the Super Bowl, baby!

  4. I'm actually looking forward to tomorrow. I was supposed to have flown across the country for meetings on Monday, but budgetary constraints in the department meant the meetings were cancelled. So here I sit, looking at Monday and Tuesday - two days I'd left empty of appointments and meetings here - free, free, free!

  5. What a coincidence CJ. I'm just writing a post on depression after Meike published a post on Sylvia Plath's book.

  6. Mondays are rarely blue for me, and today I am going to have a relatively lazy day, taking some of my accumulated extra-hours off this morning and only doing some home office work in the afternoon.
The picture of "Victor" really fits the idea of "Blue Monday", and I love the cartoon!
On Satuiday, I realized how the hours of daylight are already getting slightly longer than what they were before Christmas. That alone is (for me) a reason to be cheerful. Add to that the beautiful birdsong I woke up to for the past few mornings, and not much blue is left.

  7. I think in the US/European part of the world it's probably easy enough to explain the January blues by a combination of the factors you mentioned. I have to say, however, that I had quite a good day today. The second half of January is when the days start getting noticably longer again. Today was sunny with a little bit of snow on the ground, cold but not too slippery to walk. Stepping onto my scales in the morning, I weighed less than just before Christmas; Monday is one of my days in the rehab pool; and the 20th is when I get my monthly pension. So not really very much to complain about...

  8. Once the fun of the holidays is over, the coldest part of winter has set in, and we are dealing with all of the things you mentioned, i understand why this time can be the saddest of the year. Maybe that's why south Louisiana erupts into the Carnival season, with balls, parades, and fun.

  9. Blue Monday is probably some form of subliminal advertising gimmick I'm sure.
It was Martin Luther King Day, so that's enough blues for me.

  10. Wonderful cartoon! It made me laugh out loud. You posted this a few days ago so it's well behind you now - although your post was actually very entertaining.

  11. Love Richard Wilson. Can't see his picture without hearing him say "I don't BEEE-lieve it!" in my head. xoxox
