Scottish Holiday – Day Five – Archery and Rain

Most of Sunday was spent by the wedding party discussing how lucky we had been to have had such a sunny day for the wedding itself.

Today there was a sunny start – missed by most people who were still in bed – and then it rained (and rained, and rained, and rained….).

Partner-who-loves-tea and I went into Beauly first thing and got some shopping for Louisa, our wonderful chef) to make dinner for everyone.

Gaz and Louisa

While there we took a look at the Priory Church.  Like so many similar ecclesiastical buildings it was partially demolished during the Protestant Reformation of the 1560s.  The rest of the priory was stripped of its stone in 1653 for Oliver Cromwell’s fort at Inverness.

And still it rained, but the downpour didn’t stop some hardy folk from taking part in an archery contest.

I never did hear who won but I know Partner-who-loves-tea beat the Groom and got the same score as Brother-who-blogs!   Not bad going for a first attempt.

Being taught how to shoot.

 Everyone looks impressed!

P-w-l-t looks happy with that shot.

This was not hers!

  1. I have never hold a bow in hands myself, but it looks like something you need to be very focused for - plus have good hand-eye-coordination, both things I definitely lack.

The priory looks like a place worth exploring no matter the weather.

  2. At least the bow wasn't labelled front and back.

  3. I sometimes wonder what people would have done without all those old abbeys to pinch stone from. It must have seemed like a real bonanza to them!
Archery in the rain looks like more fun than it sounds!

  4. I didn't get the chance to comment on the wedding post...I loved all the beautiful photos! Such a handsome couple. The kilts were wonderful! I'm glad you had nice weather too. I love archery so this post was a bullseye for me! Your wife is a natural with a bow and arrow! Looks like you had a fabulous trip with many good memories. Thanks for sharing them with us!

  6. At the end of the day Brother Who Blogs and the winner from the first round came equal top with 24 points. Archery gained a number of converts on that wet afternoon. I might have found a Lewis substitute for croquet....well sort of.

  7. I love the detailed stonework of the priory church....those "once upon a time" stone masons were truly gifted.
Ten cheers go to Jo for smoking the competition as a first timer.

  9. Well done, Jo! - and GB! :) And I'd say evidence above shows that you got some excellent "shots" yourself as well, even if you used a different "weapon"...
