Friday My Town Shoot-out - The Rule of Space

This week's Shoot-out is about the rule of spce - giving the subject room to move within the picture to emphasise it and help it to stand out.  I haven't been out this week so once again I have chosen to use my brother's house in the Outer Hebrides near the town of Stornoway as "My Town".  These were taken in the space of a couple of days in May 2008.

Space to sail into.  (Does a ship that isn't a sailing ship still sail??)

 Space to motor into.

Space to fly away.

Space to move around the kitchen and make dinner.

Leaving space for GB to fall in - but he never has done.  I think he's waiting for a day when the camera is not on him.

Space to meander into.

Space to skate into on the pond.

Now this is a problem - I couldn't decide which way  the space should be??

  2. Such a fun post, John. ;^) I love all of the photos, of course, but the one of the horses touched an emotional point somehow. ;^) The last one made me laugh.
    ;^)
    So nice to catch up.
    Hugs to you and Jo.

  3. Good question about the ship sailing, even if it is not a sailing ship!

  4. great shots. the place to motor (course in the US English we would say drive into!) and a place to skate are my favorites.... the motor into probably being tops. I almost posted one simular to your first... glad I didn't my boat was smaller and not so clear. great shot also.

  5. All perfect examples! Two funny ones - the geese and the fountain-fall!

I like the long legged insect on the pond! The driving car was a good shot too...

  6. I think you applied the theme quite well. As for the two geese (I think they're geese). You're correct it can be confusing when images are somewhat central as shown. You could have moved it a little more to the right and up slightly. However, hind sight is what it is. From where I stand this exercise helps you to look a head even you're in the process of composing the shot. Where do you want to viewers eye (your eye) to focus or lead towards. At times, there is a story to tell. Your interpretation in telling the story is your's to do... as you please.

  7. Making it easy for yourself, eh? At least not very difficult to find open space on the Isle of Lewis ;) The road picture must be a perfect example for this theme! I also like that kitchen picture. The view from that window adds a lot to the feeling of space. Or is that just because I know from other photos what the view looks like? But I also think the light from the window "adds space" in this particular photo. (Oh, I'd love to have a view from my sink... Must be so much more inspiring than just staring into the kitchen cabinets!)

  9. Great job...and I think you handled the confused ducks perfectly! I guess you got out of the way of that car in time!

  10. So many great spaces. I think I like the one in the kitchen. :)

The last one made me smile too and I also really like the car on the road and the horses. Oh, hell I just like them all, especially how you narrated.

  11. Lovely pics and such a diverse set of subjects. I enjoy the snippets of your view that you capture: in words and in pictures.

  12. That's what I like - a smile inducing shoot-out! Stornoway must present endless examples of space but you captured them so well! I think the car shot is excellent especially as the background isn't cluttered. And love the last one, too!

  13. The only thing missing in that horse photo is me, standing with my arms around the black one's neck.

  14. quack! if we can't agree which direction to go, we will be stuck here all day.

  15. Fantastic exploration of space. I agree that the last one presents a dilemma! hilarious. And great commentary. Writers did deal, at first, with the "sail into" problem with "steam into." But now that steam has gone as a propellant, I'm not sure we ever came up with a new alternative.
